Discover Carbon County’s History, Legend and Lore
Carbon County’s western history is a major draw. Carbon County is a place where you can travel back in time. You can stay in one of three National Register of Historic Places hotels. The Hotel Wolf is the oldest hotel in the county. It was used by stage coach passengers as a place for rest and food. The Historic Elk Mountain Hotel has a unique style that blends Country charm and Victorian elegance. It’s also home to some amazing food! The Historic Virginia Hotel was the biggest one between Denver and Salt Lake City back in 1911. This was the spot where railroad workers and cowboys could rest and refuel. It also served as a central location for meetings and gatherings. You can still go back to those days in antique sleeping rooms and at the Shiloh Saloon. Bullet holes scattered throughout will remind you of past shootouts.
